A Love Note About Rage / Une Note d’Amour sur la Colère (2018), workshop, Bétonsalon - Centre d’Art et de Recherche, Paris (France)


















Et si tout com­men­çait par un éclat de rire comme réponse au chaos ? Un jardin fleuri, des ban­de­ro­les rebel­les, une fureur de dire, et Eartha Kitt qui éclate de rire devant un jour­na­liste qui lui demande si elle vou­drait faire des sacri­fi­ces pour un homme. Sa réponse pleine de ful­gu­rance devient un éclat de vie qui à la fois est l’expres­sion d’une joie mais aussi d’une forme de cons­ter­na­tion. A partir de ce rire ambigu est né une pro­po­si­tion : A Love Note About Rage (Une note d’amour sur la colère). Comment penser un tra­vail en commun à tra­vers nos émotions et nos expé­rien­ces ? Il s’agit d’un work­shop ovni et pro­téi­forme qui, dans le cadre de l’expo­si­tion TEMPLE OF LOVE de Gaëlle Choisne à Bétonsalon, va tenter de décor­ti­quer deux émotions contrai­res, com­plé­men­tai­res, didac­ti­ques, poli­ti­ques, inha­bi­tuel­les, anti-capi­ta­lis­tes : l’amour et la colère. Il s’agira alors de cons­ti­tuer un temple d’expé­rien­ces, de dis­cus­sions et d’affects pour se réunir, par­ta­ger, s’aimer, se regar­der, com­pren­dre, dis­cu­ter, écouter et désap­pren­dre à partir des tra­vaux d’Audre Lorde, Roland Barthes, Nayyirah Waheed, Kai Cheng Thom, Terence Nance. Chaque par­ti­ci­pant.e est encou­ragé.e à pro­po­ser un par­tage (tech­ni­que, créa­tif, rela­tion­nel…) en lien (ou non) avec le work­shop le temps de ces quatre jours, dans le but de mettre en commun des res­sour­ces et de connec­ter dif­fé­ren­tes tra­jec­toi­res.
What if every­thing began by a burst of laughter as a response to chaos? A flower garden, rebel­lious ban­ners, a rage for words, and Eartha Kitt laughing and laughing at a jour­nalist asking her whether she’d sac­ri­fice any­thing for a man. Her explo­sive response, bursting with life, expresses both joy and con­ster­na­tion. From that ambiguous laughter emerged a pro­posal: A Love Note About Rage. How can we work together through our emo­tions and expe­ri­ences? As part of Gaëlle Choisne’s exhi­bi­tion TEMPLE OF LOVE, this work­shop will look at two oppo­site, com­ple­men­tary, didactic, polit­ical, unusual and poten­tially anti-cap­i­talist emo­tions: love and rage. We will build a temple of expe­ri­ences, con­ver­sa­tions, and affects, where we will gather, share, love, under­stand, dis­cuss, listen, and unlearn together, with the works of Audre Lorde, Roland Barthes, Nayyirah Waheed, Kai Cheng Thom, and Terence Nance. Each par­tic­i­pant will be encour­aged to offer some­thing to share during those four days - be it a skill, an emo­tion, an expe­ri­ence - in order to pool resources and con­nect a variety of life tra­jec­to­ries.
The work­shop will con­sist of sev­eral read­ings, con­ver­sa­tions, screen­ings, per­for­mances, and guest lec­tures. The four days of work will lead into building a frieze of ideas, draw­ings, pho­tographs, and words, from a panel that will be free of use for the dura­tion of the work­shop.
